Traded Endowments

Traded endowments are emerging as a popular form of investment and the Traded Endowments (or Second Hand Endowments) Market is becoming a popular and efficient way to release the cash value of your existing endowment policies.

The traded endowments market has existed for over 150 years but has become much more prominent in the last 10 partly as a result of the controversy over the mis-selling of mortgage related endowment policies which has resulted in many people being dissatisfied with their endowment policies and partly due to the perception that surrender values offered by life companies have not reflected their full worth. Whatever the reason, the traded endowments market is now thriving and is worth considering if you wish to cash in on the value of your endowment policy or to buy a second hand endowment as an investment vehicle.

Selling endowments on the traded endowments market usually results in better value than dealing directly with the life company. Buying the right traded endowments policy can deliver stable long term growth into a portfolio at low to medium risk and coupled with their sheltering capabilities can be even more attractive in the right circumstances.

However, traded endowments are complex. If you are in any doubt whether to participate in the traded endowments market let a firm of award winning financial advisors who are experienced with traded endowments assist you to maximise your investment returns. Call 01225 428444, click on the call me back button below or click here to access our enquiry centre.

Warning: When dealing in traded endowments the second hand market value and surrender value of traded endowments can go up as well as down. It is wise to seek independent financial and tax advice before committing yourself to buy or sell an endowment policy.

What Are Traded Endowments?
Traded endowments are with-profits endowment policies that have been sold by the original owners before their maturity date. A traded endowment is legally assigned to a new investor. The life assurance element of the policy is not transferred but remains on the original life assured (i.e. the policy pays out on the death of the original policyholder). The new investor takes on the obligation to pay the premiums until the maturity date or the death of the original policyholder, if earlier, and will benefit from the bonuses already declared and declared in the future.

It is possible to sell an endowment policy on the traded endowments market in order to realise its current value as an alternative to surrendering it back to the life insurance company. A traded endowments company will usually offer a price 10%-15% higher (and sometimes more) than the surrender value (i.e. the price which the insurance company will pay to buy back the policy before maturity).

Traded endowments can also be purchased as an investment. They can be tax efficient. A traded endowments policy which has been in force for at least 10 years will only be liable to capital gains tax which will be payable on the difference between the policy proceeds on disposal and the cost of the policy plus all subsequent premiums paid. However, a traded endowments policy which has been in force for less than 10 year (or less than three quarters of the policy term) may be liable to both income and capital gains tax.

As always it is wise to seek investment advice if you are buying or selling in the traded endowments market. Working with the right advisor is essential for you to maximise your investment returns. To contact a Financial Services Authority (FSA) qualified advisor complete an enquiry form or call 01225 428444.
